Emergency demolition is for a structure a town has ordered torn down because it is unsafe. The damage may come from a fire, a partial collapse, a storm or a vehicle strike. The order comes from the town's construction official or its engineer. We work under that order with the town, the owner, the insurer and the utilities.
The structure comes down in a controlled way, and we haul the debris away. As a demolition contractor in Paterson, we take this work from towns and from owners who have an order.
Tell us about the building or the site and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code has a section on unsafe structures. A code official examines any building reported as dangerous and files a report. The construction official then serves the owner a written notice. It lists the repairs, or it requires the structure vacated or demolished within a set time.
When a structure is in actual and immediate danger of collapse, the code lets the official act directly. The official can order people out and close the sidewalk and street beside it. The official can also have the work done to make it safe, and that work can include demolition. Either way, the order sets the scope, and we work for whoever holds it.
Federal asbestos rules have a section for a structure a town orders down because it is in danger of collapse. That section still calls for a written notice, and parts with asbestos are kept wet as they come down. If asbestos is in the structure, the licensed asbestos abatement contractor we work with handles that part. It is the same split of work as on any asbestos abatement and demolition job.
After a fire, investigators and the insurance adjuster may need to see the structure first. An engineer decides what can stand and what has to come down. Before the work starts, federal safety rules call for an engineering survey of the structure by a competent person.
We fence the site and keep people back from the structure. The same federal rules call for every utility line to be shut off or capped outside the building first. The utility company gets notice in advance. New Jersey's One Call law covers demolition too, so a call to 811 gets the underground lines marked.
The excavator pulls the structure apart piece by piece with a demolition grapple. Our trucks and containers carry the debris out. Concrete and metal go to recycling, as with any demolition debris removal job. When the last load is out, the site is left stable for the owner's next step.
Our yard in Paterson holds the equipment, and the work takes us across North Jersey and the state. Most of our work is demolition for towns and counties, bid as public work. Our past jobs include a damaged structure taken down for a Hudson County town.
State code says an owner doing demolition must protect the properties next door and the street. When a condemned building sits on a tight block, we plan the teardown around the buildings beside it.

We look at the building and the lot, and how our machines will get in. We note what the building is made of and what stands close to it.
The quote spells out what comes down and how the lot is left. We set the date once you say yes.
Each utility confirms its connection is removed or sealed, and then the town can issue the demolition permit. Any asbestos that would crumble is abated before the teardown. A call to New Jersey One Call (811) gets the buried lines marked.
Our excavators bring the structure down, and the debris is sorted and hauled. The lot is left graded, or dug for the new foundation when the builder is ready.
